WORKSHOP // ‘Handmade Paper’ by Emma Harris

In this beautiful paper workshop, you can learn how to make paper from recycled pulp by hand; with the same technique used for hundreds of years.

The art of papermaking began almost two thousand years ago in China, where the technique of pulping plant fibres was first discovered. More than a thousand years passed before paper reached Europe in the 14th century.

Making handmade and artistic paper is a creative activity that provides endless opportunities to play with the composition, thickness, various decorative elements. Flower petals or glitter can be embedded into the pulp and the finished paper can be given a lacy structure under a press or pressed between the metal plates to have a smooth surface. The liquid pulp can hold special-shaped sheets of paper or play with watermarks.

In the workshop, we give an overview of different techniques and possibilities.

‘Look into my Ice’ is a romantic initiative to enhance our emotions towards the coldest entity on Earth: Ice. The transeuropean project is part of the official program of the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 and offers new ways to approach the disastrous speed of the disappearance of polar and glacial ice as a result of the human made climate crisis.
