WORKSHOP // Calligraphic bookplate course with Merike Tamm

TYPA invites those interested in books and calligraphy to take part in the 3 part calligraphic ex libris course! On the course you will get acquainted with ex libris history and different calligraphy styles. By the end of the course each participant will have a personal ex libris and a cliche to print it with.

Ex libris or a bookplate is a small print that is glued into the inside covers of books and claims ownership of said book. Traditionally an ex libris contains the book owner’s name, an illustration and the words “ex libris”. Calligraphy on the other hand is the art of beautiful handwriting which combined with an ex libris can add elegance and personality to it. During this course every participant will make a personal ex libris and get a cliche for printing it.

 During the course you will learn:
• The history and traditions of ex libris
• Different calligraphy styles and techniques
• How to design your own individual ex libris
• How to print an ex libris the traditional way
 
The course will take place on three Saturdays - April 5th, April 12th and April 26th - and will last for a total of approximately 6 hours.
At the end of the second Saturday participants can choose whether they want to cut their ex libris out of lino by themselves or we will order a metal cliche of it. The cost of the cliche is not included in the course price and will cost a maximum of 20 euros.
The course is suitable for any experience level.
