THEATER // Üdi and Viiding. Soundscapes and soundscapes 22.11

Kalev KUDU, author and director of the performance.
On stage:
KUDU (word, Tibetan bells, sound box).
MARTINI (electronic instruments).
Zero Theatre's performance is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the birth of poet, actor and director Juhan Viiding on 1 June last year.
The performance is also a tribute to the classical guitarist and teacher Kuldar Kudu (1965-2005), with whom we staged the 1998 production of Üdi and Viidingu's "I laugh that I cry".
In 2023, KUDU and classical guitarist Siim Kartau performed "Üdi and Viiding. Speeches in the Inland".
The current zero theatre performance, to which we have also added new texts, was created in collaboration with MARTIINIGA, an electronic and experimental musician, leaning away from the classical structure and content towards surrealism and, at times, absurdism.
The texts are from the works of both Jüri Üdi and Juhan Viidingu, and during the performance it is possible to perceive transitions from Jüri Üdi's world to Juhan Viidingu's and vice versa.
The programme is structured in the 'style' of zero theatre: as a person's journey to his or her own 'inner land', as reaching his or her own nature, or as reaching silence and peace, the zero state.
KUDU has been working as a professional theatre artist since 1989, mainly in Tartu. He has been the founder of three theatres, two of which are still active (TÜT, since 1999 and nullteater, since 1992).
Started as an actor and gradually evolved more into a director and producer, although he hasn't stopped acting either. He has been in the zero theatre's Visnapuu's Death Plays (Endspiel.H. Visnapuu's Last Days in New York) and in Viiding's projects.
In total, KUDU has produced nearly 70 productions (including in Moscow, Minsk, Belgium, Georgia, Latvia and Finland). It has brought to the Estonian theatre scene for the first time authors such as A. A. Vvedensky, D. Harms. M. Heinsaar, S. Kane, P. Prjaško, J. Ehlvest and others.
As a result of KUDU's pedagogical work, nearly 20 of his former students-actors are working in Estonian theatre and film.
Since the mid-1990s MARTINI has been active in the audiovisual and sound arts, starting in the creative association NE! and the solo project Muutuvkoosseis. Throughout time, he has participated in the experimental art scene in Tartu, has been involved in the interdisciplinary grouping eksp and, together with Juka Käärmann, has been the leader of the Arvo Kolmnurk community. He has designed performances at Tartu Children's Theatre and Tartu University of Tartu, and has given spoken word performances at events organised by ;paranoia.
Since 2023, there has been a collaboration with nullteatr.

In 2012, the record label Õunaviks released MARTIN's album "The Threat of the Storm". Since 2016, he has been creating compositions in collaboration with the creative association vmr (Villem Jahu, Martiini, Riho Kall), with whom he also created Sünoptik, a bandcamp platform for creators working on the borderline between experimental and conventional sound, which has resulted in several fruitful collaborations. One notable example was the release of the LP Vahelüli and its performance in Klassikaraadio's "Kontserdisaal" series. More recently, Martiini has been involved in the activities of the art group Chaos Congregation. He has also given some solo concerts.
