EXHIBITION // Stereovision

Stereovision: E. Russow's recordings from Tartu and an overview exhibition of the most common stereoscopes.
Curator: Käty Tarkpea
The exhibition invites you to travel back to a time when foreign lands and entertainment were limited. In the middle of the 19th century, stereoscopic photographs showing real, three-dimensional images and the equipment for viewing them became very popular, bringing the world to armchairs and making them available to buy or rent at affordable prices. Picture series were offered on all kinds of subjects: expeditions, erotica, religious allegories, portraits, science, etc.
I invite you to reflect on the value of entertainment at a time when everything comes in a rush, in abundance, in your pocket - and without leaving your home. Can Edmund Russow's stereo recordings of botany at the University of Tartu at the end of the 19th century still divide our minds?
Käty Tarkpea graduated in photography from the Tartu University of Art and Design Pallas in 2012, studied at the Linz University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, and in 2016 completed the highly acclaimed course "Stereoscopy: An Introduction to Victorian Stereo Photography" at the University of Edinburgh. His main interests are old and experimental photographic techniques. Today Käty Tarkpea is a visiting lecturer and trainer in photography at Pallas University.
