Abandoned Nordic project started in 2015 when Tanja Palmunen and Kimmo Parhiala accidentally stepped through the doors of an abandoned mental hospital. Behind the doors they found a completely different world, and they wanted to return to that world again and again.

Tanja and Kimmo have travelled to Europe's overgrown castle courtyards and the rarely stepped paths of remote villages, looking for the strange enchantment of decay. Over the years, they have visited over a thousand abandoned buildings. Visiting and photographing places that are on the verge of collapse is difficult, even dangerous, but for these two adventurers, the project is a key to a world that can in its best be like a scene from a horror movie.

Abandoned buildings fascinate many of us. Being able to step into the past through these places, find answers to how our world looked like and what has happened is a unique way to experience history. It is not intended to visit these places, and that is exactly why their world is so special. They give a different perspective to what we see around us, everyday.

Hüljatud Põhjala projekt sai alguse 2015. aastal, kui Tanja Palmunen ja Kimmo Parhiala astusid kogemata sisse mahajäetud vaimuhaigla ustest, mille tagant leidsid nad täiesti teistsuguse maailma ja nad tahtsid sellesse ikka ja jälle tagasi pöörduda.

Tanja ja Kimmo on rännanud Euroopa võsastunud lossiõuedele ja kõrvaliste külade radadele, otsides lagunemise kummalist lummust. Aastate jooksul on nad külastanud üle tuhande mahajäetud hoone. Kokkuvarisemise äärel olevate paikade külastamine ja pildistamine on keeruline, isegi ohtlik, kuid nende kahe seikleja jaoks on projekt võtmeks teise maailma, mis võib oma parimal juhul olla nagu stseen õudusfilmist.

Mahajäetud hooned paeluvad meist paljusid. Astuda läbi nende paikade minevikku, leida vastuseid sellele, kuidas meie maailm välja nägi ja mis on juhtunud, on ajaloo kogemiseks ainulaadne võimalus, andes uue vaatenurga sellele, mida me enda ümber igapäevaselt näeme.
